LAKELAND, Fla. — Under the lights on the Florida Southern College intramural fields, students gather for what has become a weekly ritual of friendly rivalry, persistent competition and unexpected connection.
Intramurals at Florida Southern offer recreational leagues in sports such as flag football, soccer, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and basketball. Teams are organized through clubs, residence halls and friend groups. Many students turn to intramurals for a break from academic pressure and a chance to build new relationships across campus.
Campus Recreation staff members said participation has grown steadily this semester, particularly in co-ed leagues. Students often return season after season, forming teams that stay together throughout the year. The opportunity to compete without the demands of varsity athletics remains a major draw.
Ultimate frisbee is one of the most active leagues, drawing players from different majors and class years. Games are fast-paced and constantly moving, with celebrations breaking out on the sideline after scoring plays. Frisbee allows new players to join without prior experience, making it popular for students who enjoy learning a sport with low pressure.
Flag football also continues to attract turnout, especially from students who like outdoor competition in cooler evening weather. Matches typically run for two halves, with substitutions rotating every few plays. While teams work hard to win, the league remains recreational and social. Campus Recreation encourages sportsmanship and team-to-team respect.

Beyond competition, intramurals often create connections that stretch beyond the field. Students meet new friends, develop routines and keep in touch across semesters. Many describe intramurals as one of the easiest ways to get involved on campus without joining a formal organization.

Campus Recreation posts weekly league updates, team schedules and championship results. Staff members said they hope to continue expanding sports options, with interest growing for dodgeball and kickball tournaments later in the academic year.
Intramurals are open to all students, regardless of experience level. Registration typically begins at the start of each term through the campus recreation website. Participants receive schedules, rules and instructions before matches begin.
As the fall intramural season progresses, teams continue competing for standings, playoff seedings and the sense of community that comes with shared competition. Students sign up to play for different reasons, but many stay because intramurals provide both friendship and a place to unwind.
