A passionate philosophy major at Florida Southern College, driven by a love for law and animal welfare, seeks to make a positive impact.
Lorna Mary Truett, a vibrant and ambitious philosophy major at Florida Southern College, is a young woman with a deep passion for philosophy, law, and animal welfare. Hailing from a family that cherishes rescuing animals, Truett has a menagerie of pets, including four cats, two dogs, and a soft spot for the raccoons that frequent her home. “The oldest cat we have now I got when I was four and I named her Kiki. She was rescued from the Humane Society. And then we got Oliver, he was found in the field, then came Callie, my mom’s a lawyer, so she was found at the courthouse, and it was either she gets put down or we take her, so we took her. And then CeCe was being fostered by one of my mom’s friends, and she’s just so fluffy and cute, so we took her. And then we bought Gizmo, but Luna was found in a parking lot, we saw her, and we needed her to complete our little family,” said Truett.
Truett’s journey into the world of philosophy was influenced by the professors at Florida Southern College and the prospect of preparing for a successful career in law. She stated that she was particularly drawn to philosophy as it has the highest pass rate on the LSAT, aligning with her aspirations to pursue a career in law, with a focus on family law and animal rights. Her decision to become a lawyer is driven by her desire to make a positive impact on the lives of children and animals, echoing the compassionate values instilled in her by her family and her
experiences working at her mother’s law firm.
Truett’s dedication to her studies is evident as she enthusiastically delves into the works of Plato and enjoys her classes, particularly her major in philosophy, because of the professors she has encountered. “The professors are just amazing. I’ve learned so much from them. It’s genuinely crazy how I’ve only been here for two and a half semesters, and I just am like wow I am getting so much more knowledge than all my years of life,” said Truett. Truett also stated that she
appreciates the in-depth discussions on morals, ethics, and how the world and mind work, finding it all to be beautiful. The professors have played a significant role in her positive experience, and she values the immense learning and growth she has gained from them.
Truett’s commitment to making a difference extends beyond her academic and career aspirations. Her involvement in campus activities, including serving on the Student Government Association (SGA) and being a part of the eSports League of Legends team, reflects her dynamic and multifaceted nature. “Last year I was on SGA. I did a bunch of things and helped with the events and some voting. I’m also now on eSports, the League of Legends team. It is an experience. It’s a
great group of people and, it’s honestly fun, although a little stressful,” Stated Truett. While she decided to step back from SGA this year to prioritize her studies and eSports involvement, her dedication to contributing to the campus community remains unwavering.
Looking ahead, Truett stated that she is determined to continue her journey at Florida Southern College, where she finds herself inspired by the beauty of the campus and the supportive academic environment along with the “amazing group of friends” she has made along the way.
