Sports betting from the fan’s perspective

Dan Goodwin

Over the last few years, the sports betting industry has taken over as one of the top ways companies have made money and has grown popular among fans. Sports betting has no doubt taken over and is immensely popular among fans as it can sometimes lead to fans only watching events for certain bets to be fulfilled instead of enjoyment of the game. When it comes to betting on sports it can be a split argument among fans as some can find it enjoyable while others can find it harmful to themselves and develop an addiction to gambling on sporting events. People seem to bet often on sports because it would appear to be one of the most reliable things that people can make bets on and feel almost certain that they can have success when placing these kinds of bets.

Fans out of a 450 people survey based in the USA participate in sports betting as 46% of the nation’s population has taken at least one sports wager in the past year. The same survey also chose basketball as the most preferred sport to bet on as 53% of the fans chose it to be the most popular sport to bet on, while other sports included Soccer (51%), Football (46%), Baseball (22%), Tennis (11%). When it comes to betting platforms some of the top Sportsbook sites used by fans include Draft Kings (57%), FoxBet (50%), FanDuel (45%), Betmgm (41%), and PointsBet (41%).

When it comes to sports betting being placed as a law whether it takes place online or in person 59% support the idea of sports betting and being able to spend their money freely whereas 37% disagreed and thought that it can lead to a gambling addiction while another 4% had mixed feelings about sports betting. When it comes to certain platforms 34% support both online and both in-person sports betting, while 30% do not support online sports betting while 29% do not support in-person sports betting and 35% have neutral feelings about sports betting online while 36% have mixed feelings about sports betting taking place in person.

Some who are for sports betting express that they are free to use their hard-earned money in whatever way they please to while those who are opposed call the idea reckless.

Expressing right to freely use hard earned money for sports betting even if it means losing money by betting in the process
Expressing right to freely use hard earned money regardless of their purpose with it which in this case involves sports betting
Expressed the idea of sports betting as silly and can lead to recklessness

Ever since sports betting was declared legal in the United States the gross gaming revenue has increased rapidly and it only seems to be going up as more customers begin to bet more on sports. Sports betting is legal in 33 states as well as Washington DC and more states could very well be joining them soon as the industry only seems to be growing.

As sports betting continues to gain popularity even in states that do not officially allow sports betting. While it is in discussion to be legalized the fans seem to think that it is similar to betting in casino. It not only helps make games more interesting for fans and allows them to spend their hard-earned money however they may choose to do so. Some fans that live in states where sports betting is not legal such as Missouri have even placed bets in neighboring states that do support sports betting such as Illinois and Iowa. Fans placing bets in their non-native states can influence each state’s government to eventually legalize sports betting as some believe that it is inevitable that sports betting will become legal.
